Since January is a popular month for email scams, here are some tips to help avoid them and keep the good times going all year long.
- Watch out for unsolicited donation requests from organizations that sound legitimate if you’re not quite certain how they got your contact information.
- Research charities only through their official websites and make sure your donations are not made through a click-through that you receive in an email.
- Emails or text messages claiming you missed a delivery, that a delivery is being held due to incomplete information, that money is due, or that a subscription needs to be renewed should be verified by directly visiting the official website. Find the site by googling it yourself, not by replying to the email or calling the phone number in the email.
- You will see frequent scam emails that seem to be coming from UPS, Best Buy’s Geek Squad, PayPal, and McAfee computer security, when in fact they are not. Understand how to verify who really sent the email by clicking on the ’name’ of the sender. It will reveal the true email address it came from.
